Lejirma takes five-shot lead into Sunshine Tour final round

John Lejirma has surged ahead with a flawless 3-under par 69 to take a commanding five-shot lead after day two of the Sunshine Development Tour at Ruiru Sports Club, setting the stage for a gripping final round chase teeing off on June 11, 2025.
He extended his fine form in the second round of the East Africa Swing, carding a steady 3-under-par 69 to take his total for the two days to 9-under-par 135. Five solid shots clear of his nearest challenger, Dismas Indiza.
Lejirma was cautious on the front nine except for the 8th hole, where he suffered a bogey before saving the shot with a birdie on the 9th.
He then played a bogey-free back nine, dominating the 10th, 13th, and 17th with birdies, to card a 33 for a total of 69 in the penultimate round.
Speaking to People Sports shortly after his second round, where he extended his lead to 7 under par, Lejirma shared his final game plan to secure his first SDT title while remaining cautious of Dismas Indiza, who struggled with his putter.
“My focus today was mainly to showcase good golf while reminding myself to stay focused on the big goal, not the leaderboard or the pressure of delivering against big names like Dismas Indiza on my back. I played better… a swing at a time… with the big game plan of maintaining my consistency,” Lejirma told People Sports.
Dismas Indiza of Kakamega Sports Club leapfrogged to second place after a solid round of 3-under-par 69 for a tournament total of 4-under-par 140.
Teeing off from 10th in the company of Kenya’s No.1 amateur golfer, Michael Karanga and Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera, Indiza played a bogey-free back nine, holing a birdie at the 11th for a total of 35.
On the first nine, he opened strong with back-to-back birdies on the 1st and 2nd holes, before holing his only bogey of the round at the 4th.
He then shot a birdie at the ninth for a total of 34. He now sits one shot ahead of Railway Golf Club’s Samuel Njoroge on the leaderboard after two rounds.
Indiza noted that he aimed to take the lead, but his putter failed him when it mattered most.
“I thank Betika for supporting my golf. My game plan today was very solid right from the tee; I was hitting fairways and greens throughout. But I’m partly disappointed because I missed a few putts that could have taken me to 10 under par. Also, a nagging ankle injury slowed me down, but I’m confident I’m worthy of a comeback. Five shots is not a big lead against me,” Indiza told People Sports.
Samuel Njoroge of Kenya Railways carded a solid round of 3-under-par 69 to climb into a tie for third place on the leaderboard. Njoroge is tied with last week’s Thika Greens champion, Njoroge Kibugu and Mollel Nuru from Tanzania at 3 under par.
After an even-par 72 in round one, Samuel Njoroge made gains with birdies on the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 10th and 18th, while conceding bogeys on the 13th and 15th.
Samuel Njoroge said: “I’m happy with how I played today. I gave myself more opportunities and converted some key putts, especially on the front nine. The back nine was a bit up and down, but I recovered well on the closing holes. I feel good heading into the final round.”
Thika Greens champion Njoroge Kibugu of Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club sits in fifth after returning a 1-under-par 71, taking his total to 2-under par. Kibugu made a total of seven birdies, but three bogeys and a triple bogey at the fourth hole became his main setback.
Elvis Muigua, the rising amateur from Ndumberi Golf Club, delivered a solid round of 1-under-par 71 to move into sixth position overall.
Muigua made birdies on the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 14th holes, with a single bogey on the 6th the only blemish on his card.
Amateurs Elvis Muigua, Michael Karanga, and Naom Wafula were the only other players to return level-par scores or better after two rounds.
Karanga, who opened with a 2-under-par 70 in round one, followed up with a 2-over-par 74 but remains inside the top group heading into the final round.
Naom Wafula, of Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort, continued to impress as the leading lady in the field.
