The four year reign of National Mens’ Volleyball league-General Service Unit has been neutralized as the defending champions got pipped 3-0 (23-25/22-25/14-25) in the on going Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) playoffs by last year losing finalists Kenya Ports Authority yesterday at Kasarani Indoor Arena.

With this result,it means Kenya Prisons who already have six points in their last two games, need only a point today against GSU to be crowned National champions in what has been an eventful season. The Ruaraka based GSU under experienced Gideon Tarus will still be listed as one of the teams to compete in the Continental Championships next year.

The opening two sets were closely fought but in overall GSU were hard done by poor service game.KPA on the other hand came to the party with all-round disciplined play and won a whopping 79 points on attack as opposed to 59 points from GSU. The Dockers did their homework right particularly in the blocking department as they waded off attacks with finality against the struggling Red Berets team.

KPA Coach Sammy Mulinge was excellent in tactics especially in utilizing their stoppers and libero/captain ( Sam Juma) to full effect. To prove this, the last set was literally a smooth affair for the Dockers save for a few hiccups along the way. David Thuita was on fire across the net while Micah Lemoi and Brian Kamonde were doing their due duties at the back of the baseline.

KPA who lost 3-1 (18-25/21-25/25-21/ 18-25) to Prisons Kenya next face Kenya Defense Forces who lost 3-0 (21-25/18-25/22-25) to Prisons Kenya. This should be an equally electrifying treat for the fans.

Prisons Kenya will be going in ready for war in a bid to upstage the difficult Dockers who have been a revelation over the past three years. Already Prisons has a head to head advantage in the Playoffs of 1-0 over KPA which should be a slight advantage to Dennis Mokua’s team. The Ex-international will know at the back of his mind that nerves and pressure will be a factor in the Finals and therefore will definitely be alive to that aspect on deadline day today. In their 3-0 win over KDF,Prisons Kenya utilized their big men in the attack sector while equally going head to head against the Army side in the block department.

Prisons suffered momentarily in their setting department but that was quickly fixed in the second set as they enjoyed a bit of breathing space. As for KDF,their blocking areas seemed exposed and frequently got exposed down the net with Prisons power hitters making a meal when opportunities struck.
