Kisumu giants separated in pools to cool down early tension

Kisumu County Secondary Schools Sports Association (KCSSSA) has avoided an early showdown between boys’ football defending champions Kisumu Day and last year’s runners-up Agai Mixed Secondary by placing the archrivals in separate pools in this year’s fixtures.

According to competition details released on June 13, 2025, by county secretary George Osura and jointly prepared with assistant secretary Milka Matiku and eight sub-county secretaries (among them Cecil Onyango, Emos Awuor, Amos Ongete and Dan Orieny) the ball games are scheduled to run from June 18 to June 21, 2025.

In the boys’ football category, Kisumu Day has been placed in Pool ‘A’ alongside Kasagam Secondary School from the Kisumu City outskirts, Muhoroni High School, Ngere Boys from Muhoroni sub-county, and Magunga Secondary School from Nyakach sub-county.

Agai Mixed, last year’s 1st runners-up, headline Pool ‘B’, which also features Kisumu Boys High School, a team that has also been embroiled in player eligibility disputes.

Other teams in the same pool include Lela Mixed Secondary, Dago Kokore Secondary from Kisumu West sub-county and Nyando Secondary.

Notably absent from the county fixtures is Katolo Mixed Secondary School, a formidable side that was eliminated this year by archrivals Onjiko Boys during the Nyakach sub-county level.

In 2024, Katolo had lodged a successful petition against Onjiko over the fielding of ineligible players, which allowed them to advance to the county stage and reach the final, only to be disqualified after Kisumu Day filed a similar protest.

In the girls’ football category, Pool ‘A’ comprises East Africa and national 1st runners-up Nyakach Girls (Plateau Queens), Ahero Girls, Migingo Girls, Dr Aloo Gumbi Secondary and Magadi Secondary.

Pool ‘B’ includes Magunga Secondary, Kudho Secondary, Ndiru Mixed, Koru Girls, and Sinyolo Girls.

In boys’ Rugby 7s, Pool ‘A’ will feature Maseno School, Chemelil Sugar Academy and Ngere.

Pool ‘B’ includes Otieno Oyoo, Magear Model and Thurdibuoro.

Pool ‘C’ hosts Nyabondo, Lions High, and Jans Secondary, while Pool ‘D’ features Onjiko, Kisumu Day, Masogo and Muhoroni Secondary.
