Kipchoge embraces fans after 9th place finish at Sydney Marathon
Eliud Kipchoge, widely regarded as the greatest marathoner of all time, proved once again that his legacy extends far beyond podium finishes after placing ninth at the 2025 Sydney Marathon.
The two-time Olympic champion crossed the line in 2:08:31, well off the winning pace, but his message afterwards was one of joy, gratitude, and unity.
The race, which was staged under bright skies and finished by the iconic Sydney Opera House, was won by Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Kiros in 2:06:06, a new course record. On the women’s side, Paris 2024 gold medallist Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands claimed victory in 2:18:22, also setting a course best.
While the spotlight shone on the champions, the reception Kipchoge received along the route demonstrated his enduring status as the sport’s most inspiring figure.
“Today, we all felt so much support and energy across the course from the incredible fans,” Kipchoge wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday, August 31, 2025, after the race.
“I have prepared myself in the best possible way and tried to stretch my mind to push myself. The support was heartwarming. That is why I can only stand here with a smile.”

Running with purpose beyond medals
At 40, the Kenyan marathon legend admitted the day did not unfold as he had hoped, particularly as he faded in the final 10 kilometres. Yet his reflections after the race underscored his philosophy of running with purpose beyond medals and records.
“I’m happy to go across the finish line. I have nothing to prove,” Kipchoge told reporters. “My mission is to bring all the people together. Let us surpass 55,000 next year to run here. It’s a beautiful course, one like no other in the world.”
Kipchoge’s words resonated with Sydney’s enthusiastic crowd, many of whom turned out in record numbers to witness the city’s debut as part of the World Marathon Majors. His presence, despite a modest result by his standards, added prestige to the event and inspired thousands who lined the streets. Smiling, gracious, and forward-looking, he summed up his journey best.
