National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has urged Kenyans to conduct themselves with decorum during the Harambee Stars’ quarter-final clash with Zambia on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Addressing the National Assembly on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Ichung’wah encouraged those attending the match at Kasarani Stadium to maintain discipline and create an atmosphere that motivates the team.

“And those of us who will get the opportunity and get to Kasarani, to do so with immense decorum so that we encourage our team, they are doing a great job on the field, and the only way we can exercise our support for the team is to exercise our cheering in a very disciplined manner,” Ichungwah stated.

He stressed that the best way to show support is through orderly and respectful cheering, adding that disciplined behaviour from the fans will reflect positively on the country and the team’s spirit.

“So that we cheer on our Harambee stars, and I am sure we will get there and we will win this CHAN, Mr Speaker; I can see it coming home. That’s why I want to encourage Kenyans who patronise the stadium to do so in a very disciplined manner,” he added.

Security protocols

His remarks follow recent incidents in which some fans breached security protocols during a previous match, gaining entry to the stadium without being searched or undergoing proper security checks.

The breaches included storming the gates and engaging in general disorder, actions that have placed Kenya at risk of being banned from hosting matches.

Ichung’wah appealed to Kenyans to enjoy and support the game responsibly, whether from the stadium, on the streets, or from their homes, emphasising that national pride should be matched with disciplined conduct.

CAF restrictions

This comes moments after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) imposed stringent measures for Kenya’s upcoming home matches at Kasarani Stadium, ahead of the Harambee Stars’ last Group A outing against Zambia on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at the mentioned facility.

The continent’s football governing body has warned that failure of the Football Kenya Federation and the government to fully comply could result in more severe sanctions, including relocating future fixtures to alternative venues.

The directives follow repeated and serious security lapses during previous home games, with CAF insisting on immediate action to safeguard spectators, staff, and the integrity of the tournament.

Under the new measures, stadium capacity will be capped at 60 per cent, allowing a maximum of 27,000 tickets per match. Only electronic ticket holders will be granted entry, with thermal tickets explicitly prohibited to curb gate overruns and ticketing irregularities.
