Kenya men’s sevens rugby head coach Innocent “Namcos” Simiyu says the “Migingo derby” was the best moment in the just concluded Emirates Invitational 7s.

Kenya cruised 28-10 past Uganda on Day One and 36-7 on Day Two  to finish fifth in the tournament and clinch the plate.

Simiyu also believes Shujaa’s worst came at the quarter-finals stage where Kenya did not execute strategy as expected whereas Chile needed just two converted tries to avenge their 39-7 humiliation at the same venue on April 2 during the first leg of the tournament.

“Generally the tournament was good and we had a perfect day one but on day two Chile came to play, we made a lot of errors and did not execute as expected.  We basically played poorly and we deserved the loss,” Simiyu told People Sport.

For the women’s team, head coach Felix Oloo said theLionesses will need to improve on kickoffs before the Las Vegas Invitational 7s set for June.

Oloo was, however,  impressed by the Lionesses’ ability to withstand bigwigs including Canada, USA and Japan.

“I first have to thank the players for their ability to give big teams a run for their money.

If you compare the scores of Madrid 7d and this tournament you will notice impressive improvements but we still have to work on our kick offs before the Los Angeles tournament in June,” Lionesses coach Felix Oloo.

On Saturday evening KRU chairman Gangla Oduor was at the RFUEA grounds and received the ladies back and had a chat with select individuals. The union boss noted the Lionesses needed more exposure to rapidly boost their performance in future events.

 “The Lionesses need more exposure to prepare them for the Olympics and future events.

If you look at their progress in the continent, there was a time Lionesses used to lose by a big margin to South Africa and other teams but currently the team is Africa’s top side and can take up any challenge by fellow Olympics competitors as seen in Dubai,” KRU chairman Gangla Oduor.
