Kenya’s dream to host CHAN football tournament inches closer
As Kenya prepares to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a delegation from the African football governing body Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) led by Samson Adamu completed a key two-day inspection of the country’s stadiums on Wednesday, giving a positive report on the readiness of Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
With just days to go until the eagerly anticipated draw on January 15, FKF president Hussein Mohammed expressed confidence that the final touches will be made in time, as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania gear up to host the prestigious tournament for the first time.
Speaking to journalists immediately after the inspection, Mohammed remarked, “I’m very delighted to report that we had a very successful two-day tour of the facilities that are expected to host the upcoming CHAN competitions. We had a delegation from Caf which was comprised of various experts and I think we await now the final report. This was the final visit before the draw that is expected to be held next week and after that then the final preparation for hosting the event will take place. I think so far what we’ve seen is we’re quite encouraged with the training facilities that we have visited so far.”
He proceeded to add: “There’s still quite a bit of work to be done in a few of the other primary stadiums that will host the event. And I have the confidence that the contractors, government officials, all stakeholders who are involved in this process and the relevant committees will deliver on the mandate. So far, I think I can confidently say so good. There’s quite a bit of work of course, but we have a very competent and strong team to handle this particular event.”
The CHAN draw is scheduled for next week on Wednesday, January 15, at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), beginning at 8pm.
The biennial tournament, exclusively for players featuring in their domestic leagues, will mark a historic moment as Kenya co-hosts the event alongside Uganda and Tanzania for the first time.
CAF’s visit included an assessment of training facilities and infrastructure essential for hosting the tournament.
Mohammed described the facilities reviewed as promising and highlighted the importance of the collaborative efforts between government officials, contractors and committees in meeting the required standards.
