Kenya U20 head coach Curtis Olago has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete against tough opposition in the upcoming World U20 Trophy.

Speaking during the squad naming, he emphasized that they are prepared to give their best and compete against some of the world’s best sides in this category of competition.

Olago acknowledged the honour of participating in the tournament.

“We are here to play…we are here to compete against some of the world’s best sides when it comes to this category of competition.

“It is an honour for us to compete in this tournament and we are going to give our best. We are aware of the competition that we are about to face but we have prepared well to play a big game,” Olago said.

As the team gears up for the tournament, the support of home fans will play a crucial role in motivating the young players and propelling them forward.

This stage of their careers is pivotal as they prepare to transition to the senior national team, the Simbas. Coach Olago’s call for the fans to rally behind the team highlights the importance of their support.

“I urge all the home fans to come out in numbers to support the boys because this is a critical stage of their careers. They are soon transitioning to the Simbas, so come and support them and push them forward,” he added.

Kenya U20 opponents

Chipu, as the Kenya U20 team is known, have been drawn in Pool B alongside Hong Kong China, Samoa, and Spain. This tournament marks the return of the World U20 Trophy to Kenya for the first time since 2009, adding to the excitement surrounding the event.

The team has also welcomed some exciting additions, including UK-based fly-half Spenser Davis from England and James Olela from Kabras RFC.

In addition to Davis and Olela, the squad features notable players such as Victor Odhiambo from Strathmore Leos, Alvin Kalori from Kisumu, and Andycole Omollo from MMUST.

The team is a mix of promising talents ready to showcase their skills on the international stage.

The tournament’s fixtures and match timings have been confirmed. The opening day, Saturday 15 July 2023, will see Kenya U20 face Samoa at 12:00 pm.

The team will play their remaining group stage matches against Hong Kong China on Thursday 20 July, Spain on Tuesday 25 July, and compete in the final group stage match against Scotland on Sunday 30 July.

Kenya U20’s participation in the World U20 Trophy is not only an opportunity for the players to showcase their talent but also a chance to represent their country with pride.

As they go up against formidable opponents, the team’s determination and preparation will be put to the test. The tournament promises thrilling matches and exciting moments as these young athletes strive to make a mark on the international stage.
