Kenya hunts for victory in U18 basketball championships in Kampala
The Kenya U18 boys and girls teams will be in action for the second-round matches at the U18 basketball championships in Kampala, Uganda.
The Kenyan boys’ team will be seeking their first match of the tournament when they face Tanzania in their fixture slated for Monday, June 10, 2024, at 2.30 pm in a match that will be played at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
Mixed results for Kenya
The Junior Morans will be looking to bounce back from an 85-52 loss to Rwanda in the opening match when they face Tanzania who lost their opening round against Uganda 103-48.
The Kenyan girls managed to see off a determined Tanzania 57-47 in the opening round while hosts Uganda emerged 78-40 victors over Rwanda.
Both the Junior Morans and Lionesses will have their eyes firmly fixed on winning the tournament which is being played in a round robin format. The top-seeded team will then play the bottom team while the second team faces off with the fourth-placed team in fixtures that will determine the finalists.
The winners from both categories will represent the region at the FIBA U18 Championships in Johannesburg in August.
Egypt, who won the FIBA U18 African Championship 2022 (Boys) and finished second in the girls’ division, will automatically qualify for the 2024 edition as a wild card, joining Mali, Angola, Madagascar, and hosts South Africa who have already qualified for the tournament.
The winners of the FIBA U18 African Championship will then proceed to the 2025 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup.
