Kenya marathon team for Tokyo trained on Covid protocols
Kenya’s marathon team to the Tokyo Olympics has been trained on the covid-19 guidelines in accordance with the latest version of the playbook.
The training took place in Eldoret and in attendance were all the six athletes named in the final team and their accompanying officials.
Athletes, including Bridget Kosgei, Ruth Chepng’etich, Peres Chepchirchir, Eliud Kipchoge, Amos Kipruto and Lawrence Cherono, were taken through an athlete’s journey 14 days before departure from Kenya to their return by the NOC-K team.
Playbook Version Three was released mid this month containing further covid-19 countermeasures for athletes and officials.
Delegates are required to submit an activity plan to the government of Japan 30 days before travel.
The activity plan includes the precise locations to visit in Japan, date and time of arrival and departure considering the period of stay guidelines.
The locations to visit must be included in the list of ‘Permitted Destinations’ as guided by the organisers.
Additionally, all delegation members from Kenya will be required to register online on ICON (Tokyo 2020 Infection Control Support System), download the OCHA App (Online Check-in and Health report Application) and the COCOA App (Contact Tracing and Confirming Application).
Finally, the delegation will be required to take two Covid tests within 96 hours of travel, and carry a “written pledge” to be shown to immigration officials that they will comply with the Covid countermeasures before being allowed into the country.
This is in an effort to contain the spread of the virus and deliver safe games during the celebration of the Games of the 32nd Olympiad.
The training will continue in the coming week with the rest of the athletes who are now resident in a bubble camp in Kasarani and Kenyatta University.
