Kenya Cup: Resilient KCB battle to edge Prisons Queens
Kenya Commercial Bank women’s volleyball team has earned a slot in the 2025 Kenya Cup finals after edging rivals Kenya Prisons 3-2 in a semifinal clash staged this Saturday, July 12, 2025, in Nairobi.
The Bankers achieved the feat through a remarkable five-set thriller to beat the wardens’ side.
Prisons started off the tie in a remarkable fashion, going for the jugular early on to claim the first two sets on a 25-18 and 25-23 scoreline.
Bankers fight back
Josp Barasa’s team was, however, pegged back after a startled Bankers team responded in the third set with an easy 25-18.
The team extended the victory to the fourth set on a 25-22 win to tie the game at 2-2 at the conclusion of the fourth set and set up a decisive fifth.
A spirited display in the decisive set saw Bankers complete the conquest, romping to a 15-4 win to seal the game.
Bankers, captained by Edith Wissa, now await the winner between DCI and Kenya Pipeline, who will face the DCI women’s team in the other semifinal clash with a place in the finals at stake.
Road to semis
Meanwhile, it proved to be yet another disappointing ending for the Prison Queens, who suffered yet another crushing loss at the semifinal stage.
The loss came after the team finished just out of the podium in the Kenyan National Volleyball League in May.

The volleyball team had punched their ticket to the Kenya Cup semifinals after a 3-0 set win over Kenya Army on Saturday, July 5, 2025, blitzing past the Kenya Army ladies’ team in three straight sets.
Kenya Commercial Bank Volleyball Club, on their part, made light work of Post Bank, sealing a 3-0 win in sets of 25-15, 25-14, and 25-23 to sail through to the next phase.
The win extended the fine run for the bankers’ side, whose performance in the Kenya National Volleyball League ended in a loss to eventual winners Kenya Pipeline.
Meanwhile, the competition now enters the crucial final stage with teams eyeing the ultimate Ksh300,000 prize money.
The second-place finishers will pocket Sh200,000, while the third, and fourth-place winners will take home Sh100,000 and Sh75,000, respectively.
