Kenya’s national football team Harambee Stars wrapped up their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying campaign with a nil-all draw against Namibia at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa yesterday.

Despite their efforts, Kenya failed to secure a spot in the continental tournament, as Cameroon and Zimbabwe advanced from Group J.

Head coach Engin Firat opted for Byrne Omondi between the sticks, supported by a defensive line featuring Daniel Anyembe, Erick Ouma, Johnstone Omurwa as well as Richard Odada.

Anthony Akumu anchored the midfield, assisted by Duke Abuya and Rooney Onyango, while Austine Odhiambo played behind forwards John Avire and debutant Alfred Scriven.

Notably, captain and top striker Michael Olunga, along with defender Joseph Okumu, started the game on the bench.

Harambee Stars qualifying journey began with a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe, followed by a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over Namibia.

However, back-to-back losses to Cameroon (4-1 and 1-0) dealt a significant blow to their campaign. Heading into their penultimate fixture against Zimbabwe, the Stars still had a chance to qualify but could only manage a 1-1 draw, allowing The Warriors and the Indomitable Lions to progress.

Kenya’s exit has elicited debate amongst football stakeholders with former AFC Leopards legend Peter Lichungu calling on Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to consider booking, Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat, a direct flight to Turkey after the final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match.

Lichungu, told FKF to consider sacking Firat for his failure to steer the team to the 2025 Afcon despite the support and the fact that the team was in a relatively easy group.

“There is no need for him (Firat) to jet to Nairobi. The game against Namibia should be his last. Afterward, FKF should book him a flight to Turkey. We cannot be paying a coach millions yet he is not delivering,” Lichungu said in an interview with SportsBoom.

He added that he supports the appointment of a local coach, emphasising that Kenyan legends understand the significance of representing the country and deserve an opportunity to lead.
