Kenya 7s upbeat about carrying on impressive form after winning Challenger Series

Kenya 7s co-captain Tony Omondi has emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum as they progress to the final legs of the World Challenger Series.

Shujaa had a successful start by winning the Challenger Series opener in Dubai, and Omondi is determined to carry this positive momentum into the upcoming tournaments.

Expressing his satisfaction after the victory, Omondi stated that their initial target was to start the series impressively, and he is pleased that they achieved that goal.

He emphasized the importance of continuing their strong performance until the last tournament of the series.

“We are super happy. We knew this Challenger event in Dubai was very crucial for us to start on a high and now we must carry on with the momentum until the last tournament,” Omondi told World Rugby.

Despite facing a pool-stage defeat to Germany, Kenya 7s showcased their resilience and skill, culminating in a 21-5 victory over Uruguay in the semi-finals.

Patrick Odongo played a crucial role, scoring all three tries against Uruguay and adding two more in the final against Chile, securing a 12-7 win for Shujaa.

Kenya 7s standings

As a result of their impressive performance, Kenya 7s lead the men’s standings in the Challenger Series with 20 points, holding a two-point lead over second-placed Chile.

Uruguay, who won the bronze final, are currently in third place with 16 points, and Germany hold the fourth position with 14 points.

The World Challenger Series will continue at Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo, Uruguay, on March 8-10, followed by standalone women’s and men’s events in Krakow, Poland, and Munich, Germany, respectively, on May 18-19. The current standings indicate a promising start for Kenya 7s in their pursuit of success in the series.
