Kenga optimistic of return to football action soon after long injury lay-off
By Harrison.Kivisu, January 13, 2022About one year ago, during a Premier League match pitting hosts Bandari against Western Stima, the former’s prolific striker Shaban Kenga sustained an injury that would keep him out of action for the better part of the season.
Kenga suffered a nasty knee injury during Bandari’s 2-0 home win but the dockers ultimately paid the prize in form of their prized asset being stretchered off the field.
Granted, what looked like a short period of treatment has now lasted one year and several days with coast football fans enduring missing his football antics on the pitch.
Early this week, Kenga was admitted at the Pandya Hospital in Mombasa where he was scheduled to have a final surgery to enable him to fully return to the pitch.
“I was admitted here for the final session where the medics are set to remove the screw they implanted on my knee.
It has been a painful journey missing to play on the pitch and this is something that any player would not love to go through,” said Kenga.
Since the injury, Kenga has had a very tough recovery journey and reckons that he cannot wait to rejoin his teammates.
Speaking to People Daily on his hospital bed, Kenga said he hopes to regain his fitness and reclaim his position in the top-tier league.
“After recovery, what I’m planning is to get back to the pitch and start training slowly and it’s my hope that I will be a better player who shall be an asset to Bandari.
I want to assure the team faithful that Kenga will be back and will continue with the best performance,” he added.
He said the motivation and support from his club is the driving force behind his desire to return to action.
“It has been tough but my friends and fellow players have been encouraging me and I cannot thank them enough,” Kenga said.
Asked what he thinks are the team’s chances in the 2022/22 season, Kenga said there is light at the end of the tunnel as far as winning the title is concerned.
“The league is tough and this is documented by the few points separating the frontrunners, but I believe that chances of Bandari of catching up with them are all there,’ he said
Following the injury on Kenga, Bandari Head Coach Andre Cassa Bungo was forced to source for new players in the team during the January transfer window.
Among those who were unveiled this season include Rogers Aloro from league champions Tusker and teenage sensation Boniface Mwangemi from Kariobangi sharks.
Others are holding midfielder Whyvonne Isuza from Wazito and goalkeeper Joseph Okoth from KCB.
Bandari are placed fourth in the league chart with 23 points from thirteen matches.
