KCB edge Strathmore Leos to claim national Rugby 7s title
KCB’s dominance in the 2025 National Sevens Circuit has culminated with Bankers clinching the overall title following their main Cup quarter-finals win over Strahmore Leos this Sunday, September 14, 2025, in Kisumu.
The Lewis Ojal’s side had one task only in the clash of the titans, and despite battling valiantly, touching the distance of the target, succumbed late on a 15-14 margin.
An inspired cameo from George Ooro proved the ultimate blow for Strathmore, whose quest to bridge the gap between them and bankers ended in disappointment.
Influential Ooro
Experienced Kenya Sevens star Vincent Onyala ghosted past Sammy Wafula to cross the white chalk at the far end to put Bankers on an early lead.
Brian Mwendwa hit back for Leos two minutes later with a successful conversion, earning the Scholars a two-point advantage.
Former Strathmore player George Ooro converted for Bankers after the restart to storm Andrew Amonde’s charges to a three-point lead.
The Kenya 7s star secured the try following a fine exchange between Vincent Onyala and Festus Shiasi.
A resilient Strathmore was not to be denied, with Wafula making amends for an earlier defensive indecisiveness to cover behind the posts. A subsequent successful conversion restored the hosts’ lead at 14-10.
The seesaw encounter reigned with three minutes left on the clock.
Andrew Amonde’s side, however, hit late through George Ooro, who came clutch with his second try from the bench to see the Bankers exert dominance against Leos.
Record-breaking feat
The ultimate honours, however, belonged to KCB, whose run of consistency and sheer grit secured them the overall Division One with some matches to spare.
The victory saw KCB win a record-breaking fifth national title in the history of the seven rugby with coach Amonde, who took the task midway, expressing his delight.
“It was a tough game. It was more of a mental clash. We struggled to settle in but finally made it. I want to thank the KCB fraternity for the win and everyone who has played a part in helping us to this success,” he stated.
