KCB edge Daystar Falcons to claim Kabeberi 7s crown
By Kenneth Mwenda, September 7, 2025KCB Rugby proved their pedigree once again after beating Daystar Falcons 20-10 to win the 2025 Kabeberi Sevens Cup at the RFUEA Grounds on Sunday evening, September 7, 2025.
The Bankers, who have dominated the National Sevens Circuit this year, claimed their third title of the season and moved within touching distance of the overall crown.
The victory marked the fourth successive year that KCB have lifted the Kabeberi trophy. More importantly, it tightened their grip on the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit standings, where they now sit on 114 points ahead of the Leos’ 95 points. With only the Dalas Sevens left to play, the Bankers require just a handful of points to be crowned champions.
They need just four points to seal the title, since even if Strathmore Leos win the Dalas Sevens and collect the full 22 points, their maximum tally would only reach 117.
KCB made their intentions clear early in the final. Within the opening minute, Elvis Olukusi crashed over the try-line to hand them the lead, though the conversion drifted wide. The Falcons struggled to find a foothold as the Bankers continued to pile on the pressure. Kenya Sevens international Vincent Onyala added a second try in the left corner, stretching the lead to 10-0.
The onslaught continued with Samuel Asati slicing through for another score before Olukusi bagged his second of the evening. By half-time, KCB were firmly in control with a commanding 20-0 advantage.

Daystar, playing in their first-ever main cup final, showed resilience after the interval. They pulled a try back through Patrick Odongo, who finished off a sweeping move to the delight of their vocal fans. In the dying stages, Tony Ogoma added another for the Falcons, but the comeback fell short as KCB managed the closing minutes with composure.
Despite the defeat, the Falcons walked away with plenty of positives. Their run to the final earned them 19 circuit points, boosting their position in the overall table and underlining their growth as a force to reckon with on the sevens stage.
Kabras punish Leos’ slip
Elsewhere, Kabras Sugar secured third place with a 24-12 victory over Strathmore Leos. The sugarmen, who had lost narrowly to KCB in the semi-finals, bounced back strongly. Brian Mutua scored early before Kevin Wekesa grabbed a brace. A late effort from Matthias Osimbo sealed the win.
The defeat dented Strathmore’s pursuit of the overall crown. The Leos, who entered the weekend in second place, failed to reach the final and remain 19 points adrift of KCB. With one round left, their hopes now depend on a rare KCB slip-up in Kisumu, a scenario that looks unlikely given the Bankers’ consistency.
The weekend also served up plenty of drama in the lower brackets. Menengai Oilers finished fifth after edging Catholic Monks 17-12, while Impala claimed the Challenger Cup with a 29-0 win over Homeboyz. Nakuru RFC took 13th place after defeating Embu Dragons 27-5.
