KCB Rugby Sevens side are the new George Mwangi Kabeberi Sevens winners courtesy of a conversion in a tense Cup final won 12-10 by the experienced and now the current series champions. 

Bankers made their intention known early in the game with a converted try scored by forward Bob Muhati while Levy Amunga converted it for a 7-0 lead. 

The conversion would later turn out to be the match decider despite extending their lead moments later with an unconverted try by captain Jacob Ojee for a 12-0 lead at the break. 

Strathmore Leos returned to the match stronger but got a sin-bin setback when they were almost stealing the show. Trailing by a conversion by the tournament’s top try-scorer and KCB captain Jacob Ojee did not take chances when the final hooter was blown as he kicked the ball out to end the match which got the fans at the edges of their seats. 

Ball possession

KCB assistant coach Andrew Amonde told People Daily that the Bankers will be returning to Christie Sevens at the same venue this weekend with the same intentions. He praised the students for having improved on their game while Leos head coach Louis Kisia is positive the side has ball possession and discipline areas as the key areas to improve on heading to Christie Sevens. 

“We had to dig very deep for this win, we came here with the agenda to win this title. We pushed ourselves to the limits to win the first tournament which is our pace as we work on getting better and remain consistent in delivering such results. A couple of new signings including Bob Muhati and the new faces impressed today and we hope to give them the chance to get the experience. Strathmore Leos has greatly improved and they are a well-coached side now, kudos to them for giving us a good final,” KCB assistant coach Andrew Amonde. 

Coach Kisia is now focused on delivering a title after taking up painful lessons including conversions and ball possession

, areas he believes they will polish ahead of the Christie sevens. 

“We will be back bigger, better and ready to win because winning is the next target after coming so close. We let KCB possess the ball for longer period of the game and by that they controlled the game, especially in the first half. In the second half we managed to score a try with six men just like in the semis which shows you we are a good side defensively. What we have to work on is the ball possession, conversions and our discipline,” Kisia told People Sport.
