Mathare United coach John Kamau has dismissed claims of his charges growing nervous following Wednesday, May 14, 2025, loss to AFC Leopards.

Speaking to the club media site on Friday, May 16, 2025, Kamau sounded confident that the team has battled its way from the lower reaches of the table to be where they are now and will soon complete the survival task.

Kamau further reiterated his commitment to lead the escape, emphasising that he possesses the know-how of what the task of avoiding the chop requires.

Slum Boys are ranked 11th on the log, five points above the relegation position with three games to the end of the season.

“If the fears did not creep in when we were at the bottom of the table and getting beaten here and there, then I can assure you that it’s not the time to speak of that happening now,” a confident Kamau stated.

I have said before that I have been in this kind of battle. It needs one to have the necessary shock,” Kamau stated.

Kamau admitted that the relegation battle has taken a fresh twist after the bottom sides stunned title-chasing teams to shore up their survival chances.

Among those on the winning side were FC Talanta, who edged Tusker FC 2-0, and Murang’a Seals’ victory over Sofapaka FC.

I’m happy with the response from the boys. Looking at the training, they don’t look like they lost a game. I’m happy with that. This stage is about the mental aspect of the game. Can your senior players rise to the occasion and show character? This stage has less coaching and more motivation to get through,” he stated.

Ulinzi next

Slum boys push for a return to winning ways, coming quick and fast with a match week 32 opener against Ulinzi Stars on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

Speaking on the clash, Kamau maintained that his team is braced for the challenge posed by the Soldiers.

“We are aware of what Ulinzi will bring to the game, especially on set pieces. We are braced for it. I feel tomorrow with three points we could be out of the relegation zone,” he stated.
