Kabras Sugar have surged to the top of the National 7s Circuit standings following their victory at the Driftwood 7s tournament held at Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday.

The Sugarmen showcased their prowess by clinching a hard-fought 10-7 win against Menengai Oilers in the thrilling final.

Kabras win National 7s Circuit round 2

Dennis Abukuse opened the scoring for the Oilers with a stunning long-range try, converting it himself to give his team a 7-0 lead.

However, Kevin Wekesa responded for Kabras with a try, which was successfully converted by Barry Robinson, resulting in a 7-7 deadlock at halftime.

As the match intensified, both teams displayed remarkable skill and determination, but neither could break the deadlock in regular time.

The game proceeded to extra time, where it remained scoreless in the first period. In the second period of extra time, the Oilers conceded a penalty, and Jone Kubu capitalized on the opportunity, securing victory for Kabras with a well-executed drop goal.

With this triumph, Kabras RFC not only claimed the Driftwood 7s title but also overtook KCB Rugby to claim the top spot in the National 7s Circuit.

Kabras points in National 7s Circuit

The Sugarmen accumulated 22 points in Mombasa, adding to the 19 points they earned as runners-up in the Dala 7s.

Their total of 41 points propelled them to the summit of the standings, while KCB Rugby slipped to second place with 39 points after finishing third in Mombasa.

Strathmore Leos retained their third-place position in the standings with 32 points, securing 17 points in Kisumu and 15 points in Mombasa.

Defending champions Menengai Oilers climbed to fourth place with 31 points, while Kenya Harlequin dropped to fifth with 27 points.

The excitement will then pause briefly as the circuit makes way for the World Rugby U20 Trophy, happening in Nairobi from July 15 to July 30.

The third round, the Prinsloo 7s, will electrify Nakuru City as it takes place at the Nakuru Athletic Club on August 5-6.

Nairobi’s RFUEA Ground will be the stage for the highly regarded Christie 7s on August 12-13, showcasing top teams battling for glory.

Tisap which has since replaced Kakamega 7s will now take place on September 2-3 at the Eldoret Sports Club with the National 7s returning to Eldoret for the first time since the 2018 Sepetuka 7s.

Finally, Nairobi will once again take the spotlight as the circuit reaches its climax with the George Mwangi Kabeberi Memorial 7s on September 9-10.
