Mathare United are now targeting a playoff spot and then fighting for their lives to survive relegation from the Kenya Premier League for a second successive year, we can authoritatively reveal.

Speaking exclusively to People Sport, the club’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jecktone Obure called on his players to give their all in the upcoming games.

“We have a tight game on Wednesday at home against Ulinzi and then play away against Wazito. We have to win both matches and qualify for a playoff spot, there is no other way,” said Obure.

The CEO bemoaned his hurriedly assembled squad when the season began, and the recent suspension of his two key veteran players including captain Alfred Ndonye and centre-back Lennox Ogutu. “Part of the reason why we are struggling is because we lost the first nine out of ten matches. FKF told us that they were suspecting our two key players of match-fixing and so we had to also conduct our internal investigation before suspending them,” added Obure who continued to lament of the massive lost points.

The club’s CEO has also assured his players of financial support as he claims that the club owes no staff any arrears and for that reason, every employee of the organization must fight to defend the 2008 KPL champions’ pride and honour of participating in Kenya’s first tier football league.

Mathare United seat second last from the 18-team log having played 32 league matches and accrued only 22 points, only four a drift from their closest rival Wazito lying at 16th place with 26 points.

As the FKF-PL resumes next week, Mathare United are scheduled to play at home against four-time KPL winners Ulinzi Stars on Wednesday, June 21 and then square it out, away, with former moneybags Wazito on June 24 (Saturday) – in Muhoroni.
