Inter-parliamentary games: Kenya to face Tanzania in elusive search for football win
The East African Community (EAC) Inter-parliamentary games will see Kenya clash with Tanzania on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 4:00 pm in a match where the host country seeks to register their first win with the men’s football team.
While Uganda is assured of the gold medal after winning all its matches against three East African countries, Kenya is yet to register a win in its football games.
With the games officially ending on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, Bunge FC will be seeking to outplay their Tanzanian counterparts to secure silver.
Uganda won 3-0 over Kenya, 6-0 over Burundi and 3-1 over Tanzania. Kenya on Saturday, December 14, 2024, drew 1-1 with Burundi after Senate Majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot scored a fantastic header in the dying minutes of the second half to secure the country a point.
This came after Kenya was awarded a walkover following the no-show by the South Sudan delegation.
Murkomen’s 2021 hattrick
“We were the better side but we failed to convert our chances. We still have a match against Tanzania which we really want to win, so we will continue with our preparations for it,” Bunge FC captain Otiende Amollo remarked after the draw against Burundi.
The hard-fought draw was reminiscent of a similar encounter during the EAC Inter-parliamentary games of 2021, where Uganda beat Kenya 3-0 but a spirited fight by the Kenyan legislators led to a 3-3 draw by the final whistle.
The comeback was inspired by the current Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen who scored a hattrick to get the Kenyan MPs level with the Ugandans.
Kenya also hopes for a podium finish with its volleyball team after a humiliating defeat by Rwanda over the weekend.
Rwandan legislators beat the men’s volleyball team 3-0 in a match where the Kenyans lacked proper coordination against a polished side.
“This has been a very tough game our rivals were very prepared and really coordinated well. We tried our best and we will keep practising for the next match which we will be playing next week on Monday,” Konoin MP Brighton Yegon observed after the match.
Adding: “We need more Members joining the team. Today we didn’t have any substitute on the bench and despite a player being tired he had to play through the game which our opponents capitalized on.”
