Injera, Kayange in Kenyan team for Legends Cup

Emonyi brothers Collins Injera and Humphrey Kayange, are members of the Kenyan Legends team that will compete in the Legends Cup opening leg in Kyadondo, Uganda.

The 25-man team that will take on the Ugandans includes the two legendary Kenya 7s players. Ben Nyambu, Lavin Asego, and Victor Sudi are among the other Shujaa greats on the team.

Wilson K’Opondo, Joel Ng’ang’a, Curtis Lilako, and Vincent Mose are the legendary Kenya Simbas in the team.

In 2023, at the RFUEA Grounds, the Kenya Legends defeated Uganda 69–18 on aggregate to win the Legends Cup.

They won 31–12 in the competition’s second leg, adding to their thrilling 38–6 victory in the first leg that was played in Uganda.

Seven minutes into the game, Timothy Mudoola’s injury forced him to leave, handing Uganda an early defeat.

In the ninth minute, Kenya made their first foray into Uganda’s 22 but lost possession right away.

However, Lavin Asego’s weak clearing allowed Uganda to get possession of the ball and start a left-wing attack.

Oliver Mang’eni then received a ball from Andrew Amonde and ran over to score the first try. Asego converted the try, giving Kenya a 7-0 advantage.

Up until Kenya took advantage of a turnover in the 35th minute, the score was tied. Uganda thought there had been a violation, but Collins Injera took advantage of the situation, snatching the ball and racing forward. After that, he passed on to Mang’eni, who went on to locate Victor Sudi.

Injera’s try

Injera scored from the ruck, and Asego successfully converted the try, extending Kenya’s lead to 14-0.

After a strong carry, Eddie Omondi scored Kenya’s third try in the left corner, bringing the score to 19-0 following a failed conversion attempt. Uganda made a late push, but they were unable to hold onto the ball close to Kenya’s try-line, and Kenya went into halftime leading 19 to 0.

Kenya lost Jay Williams following an injury sustained while trying to take a step at the start of the second half.

After a fast tap of the ball, former 7s captain Michael Wokorach scored Uganda’s first try in the 48th minute, giving them a lead.

Uganda kept up their resistance, scoring their second scrum try to cut the deficit to 19–12. Kenya responded promptly to this attempt, which acted as a wake-up call, with a try by George Mbaye at the opposite end, increasing their advantage to 24-10.

Asego’s deft inside ball set up Sudi to charge forward, evade his defender, and score beneath the posts for a try, sealing Kenya’s triumph. Tito Oduk converted the try successfully.

Kenya got a second chance to score, but Uganda was able to reclaim the ball.
