Greensharks target strong league finish
Greensharks captain Victor Osiche has challenged his team to build on their win against Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) to propel them to a strong finish in the Kenya Hockey Union Premier League season.
Sharks defeated the visitors 3-1 in a top-flight league match staged at the City Park Stadium on Sunday.
“It’s a good feeling to complete a double against MSC. We hope the second leg will bring forth good fortunes as we want to complete the league in a respectful position,” Osiche said.
Adan Salan’s brace was the difference for Sharks scoring from a short corner in the 38th minute and a beautiful field goal 13 minutes later to ensure the home side took maximum points while completing a double over the bottom-based side having also beaten MSC 1-0 in the first leg.
Benson Mawich had put the Sharks in the lead through a fantastic field goal barely two minutes into the match but James Omondi equalised for the visitors in the eighth minute with the match ending 1-1 at the breather.
Mixed fortunes
The loss to Sharks marked a weekend of mixed fortunes for MSC who had on Saturday beaten Parkroad Badgers 2-0.
MSC captain Mariano Emadau said unlike the match against Badgers where they were calm and patient with the ball, they were clumsy against Sharks.
“At least we have three points from the tour. The result against Badgers is encouraging after they beat us 1-0 in the first leg. We know we are not out of the relegation zone yet and therefore we will keep on working hard in the upcoming matches,” said Emadau.
Greensharks climbed up to seventh on the standings as MSC remain bottom of the 10-team table with four points having now lost seven of the nine matches they have played.
In the other men’s Premier League match, Wazalendo held United States International University Africa to a 1-1 draw.
Cliffe Omari had put Wazalendo in the lead in the 12th minute but Wayne Korir restored parity in the 36th minute for the Varsity side.
At the same venue, Multimedia University (MMU) were handed a 5-0 walkover after their opponents Parklands failed to honour their Super League fixture.
In the women’s Super League, MSC women trounced MMU ladies 2-0.
Alice Jokeyo and Dorah Jokeyo were on target for the Mombasa-based side in the 11th and 18th minutes respectively.
