Gor taps Ghanaians as assistant and goalkeepers’ coach

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ben Owu from Ghana as goalkeeper coach. Welcome to Mahia, Ben,” the club posted.
Ben Owu, a former Ghana U-17 and U-20 international goalkeeper, brings a wealth of experience from his playing career with clubs such as FC Galați Steel in Romania, Asante Kotoko, and Ashanti Gold, along with coaching experience at Medeama SC.
His appointment is part of a wider effort by Gor Mahia to rebuild their technical team following a disappointing 2024/25 season. The announcement of Owu’s arrival came alongside three other key appointments, all made public within minutes on the club’s X platform.
In another post, Gor Mahia confirmed the arrival of Charles Akonnor, also from Ghana, as the new Head Coach. Akonnor is a well-respected figure in African football, having previously managed the Ghana national team (Black Stars).
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach. The former Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned tactician. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor,” read the post.
Joining Akonnor is Kobi-Mensah Bismark, who has been named Assistant Head Coach.
“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Kobi-Mensah Bismark from Ghana as our new Assistant Head Coach. Welcome to Mahia, coach Kobia,” the club added.
New doctor joins team
Completing the new-look technical team is Brian Odongo, who steps in as Team Doctor. Odongo is a certified sports medicine specialist with extensive experience across different disciplines.
“Brian is a certified sports medicine specialist with extensive experience across multiple disciplines. Welcome to Mahia, Brian,” read the announcement.
These four appointments mark the beginning of a new chapter for Gor Mahia, coming just days after the club sacked its entire technical bench following a 2-1 loss to Nairobi United in the Mozzart Bet Cup final. The loss meant the club ended the season without a single trophy, a rare occurrence for the 19-time Kenyan champions.
With a new coaching team in place, fans are hopeful that Gor Mahia will bounce back stronger in the 2025/26 season.
