Gor Mahia’s Akonnor rues missed chances in Ulinzi Stars stalemate

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has pointed out sluggishness in front of goal after the record Kenyan Premier League champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Ulinzi Stars in round 7 of Sportpesa League on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Kasarani Stadium.

Gor Mahia were forced to settle for a share of the spoils in a tightly contested stalemate with the resilient soldiers, a result that saw K’Ogalo climb to second in the league standings, but missed a chance to claim the top spot.

Gor Mahia started brightly, exploding into the lead in the sixth minute through striker Felix Oluoch. However, the joy was short-lived as Ulinzi Stars demonstrated their resilience, pegging us back with an equaliser in the 34th minute.

The second half saw both sides push aggressively for a winner, creating a series of chances at either end. Despite the increased tempo and end-to-end action, neither team could find the decisive breakthrough, with the match ultimately ending in a stalemate.

Missed chances

The single point earned pushes Gor Mahia to second place with 13 points, now sitting just a single point behind league leaders Kakamega Homeboyz. The missed opportunity to go top, however, left a palpable sense of frustration, with Akonnor rueing missed chances.

Head coach Charles Akonnor acknowledged his side’s shortcomings in his post-match remarks. “Well, it was a tough game and I think we were slow in the way we approached the game in the first half. We didn’t do much of compactness, and we will have to improve in certain areas,” Akonnor stated.

AFC Leopards lifted their momentum again after the break, breaking down a disciplined Mathare United side to secure a third straight victory and stay unbeaten this season. Vincent Mahiga opened the scoring three minutes into the second half before James Kinyanjui sealed the result late on. The win took AFC Leopards to third on the log with 12 points, a point behind Gor Mahia, as the title race takes another twist.
