Gor Mahia forward Enock Wanyama has admitted it was devastating for him to miss a penalty against Denmark FC during the Football Kenya Federation Cup the previous week.

The elimination from the domestic competition remains Gor Mahia’s biggest setback so far in the season, and the new signing has admitted it remains a moment of heartbreak for him.

“Missing that penalty was very devastating. I let the team down because I contributed to putting an end to the team’s objective of winning the cup. What made it even harder was the fact that we prepared well for the match.

“The team had everything, and we knew ourselves very well because we had friendly games to prepare for. So from the word go, we wanted to win the game,” Wanyama told a local publication.

Hope for better performance

After missing the penalty, he admits responsibility but hopes to step up in the future.

“It turned out to be a wake-up call for me that I need to always be ready to do the hard work whenever I am called upon. I’m not a good penalty taker, and I was hoping the job would be done before it was my time to step up, but in this case, it was not.

“Either way, I am still glad I stepped up, even though the outcome did not favour me. But going forward, I’am definitely going to still be stepping up,” he added.

Wanyama made his FKF Premier League debut against Posta Rangers on Sunday. His first league match saw them register a far better outcome, given that they emerged 4-0 winners.

He came on as a substitute, and hopes he will win a starting slot on a regular basis going forward.
