CAF CL: Resilient Gor Mahia outclass El Merreikh, set date with African giants Al Ahly
Gor Mahia confirmed their CAF Champions League date with African giants Al Ahly after beating El Merreikh of South Sudan 5-2 on aggregate in a game that was played on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Nyayo Stadium.
Despite losing the first leg action in Juba a week ago, the record Premier League giants maneuvered against their preliminary rivals to set the next date with the Egyptian heavyweights.
Meanwhile, K’Ogalo put themselves in a difficult position after conceding first at home but fought back with goals from Chris Ochieng, Alpha Onyango, Alphonce Omija, and Rooney Onyango’s brace.
Ochieng equalised for Gor Mahia, who went down in the sixth minute, in a brilliant way after receiving a pass from Austin Odhiambo before volleying the ball past the visitor’s goalkeeper.
They registered the lead when Onyango, after collecting a pass from Paul Ochuoga, found the back of the net.
Four minutes past the half-hour mark, Gor Mahia scored the third goal through Omija. This came after a corner kick, with the scorer connecting brilliantly to head past El Merreikh’s keeper.
Gor Mahia were as dominant in the second half as they were in the first one, and Rooney Onyango came close to scoring another goal at the hour mark. After receiving a precise pass from Odhiambo, the Onyango hit the side netting.
Head coach Leo Neiva made changes for Gor Mahia as he brought on Samuel Kapen and Boniface Omondi for Sharif Musa and Chris Ochieng for the remaining 25 minutes.
Just after the introduction, Kapen was involved in a nice build-up that led to a goal scored by Rooney Onyango.
After showing a spirit to fight back, Gor Mahia will now have to face Al Ahly in a game whose outcome will determine their Champions League chances this season.
