FKF PL Week 19: Gor Mahia set for stern Tusker test as AFC Leopards host high-flying City Stars
Football Kenya Federation Premier League heavyweights Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are set for stern tests during week 19 of the season.
The games have been spread over three days, but as usual, the matches for Gor Mahia, unbeaten so far in the league, and the resurgent AFC Leopards will draw attention.
On Friday, January 19, there will only be one game where Sofapaka will host Kakamega Homeboyz at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
Homeboyz will be keen to return to winning ways after their recent struggle. They failed to collect maximum points against Bandari in their last game, and the Sofapaka date gives them a chance to win and fight their way back to the top three.
Sofapaka’s struggle continued with their loss against Tusker, and a win against Homeboyz will boost their morale. The appointment of Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno seemed to have given them a new lease of hope with his first win in the previous matchday, but the struggle against Tusker exposed their weakness again.
On Saturday, January 20, Bandari will face Kariobangi Sharks at Mbaraki, while Shabana, week 18 big winners with a 5-2 defeat of Nzoia Sugar, will host Ulinzi Stars at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
Nzoia Sugar, currently at the bottom of the log, will have a date with Police Stadium in South C. Police were 1-0 winners over Bidco United in their last game and will be eager to win again when they host the Sugar Millers.
The biggest game of the day will be the one pitting the record giants, Gor Mahia and Tusker. K’Ogalo will host the former champions at Kenyatta Stadium to beat them and preserve their unbeaten run.
However, many feel this is the toughest challenge Gor Mahia will face for the first time in the season. Tusker are on form after struggling in the opening weeks of the season and are currently third, threatening to push to the end.
Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards matches
Although Gor Mahia have been very solid at the back, they will have to be on high alert when they face Erick Kapaito, who is in his best goal-scoring form for Tusker.
On Sunday, FC Talanta will tackle Bidco, while KCB will host Muhoroni Youth at the Police Pavillion in South C as Posta Rangers and Murang’a Seal clash in Machakos.
Second-placed City Stars will travel to Bukhungu to face AFC Leopards. Ingwe will be looking for their fifth win, their second straight victory, but City Stars will be keen to deny them that as they hope to pile more pressure on the leaders, K’Ogalo.
