Gor, Leopards cede grounds as Tusker maintains top spot
Defending champions Gor Mahia and their rival AFC Leopards both failed to win as the Football Kenya Federation Premier League reached its halfway point on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
Gor’s 2-1 defeat to Tusker FC highlighted the weekend’s action in a match week that saw every team going it all out with only two games of the nine ending in draws.
Tusker’s poacher Ryan Ogam proved the week’s MVP with his brace earning the Brewers crucial victory in the Sunday clash.
Ogam struck at the death to decide a clash seemed destined for a draw. The in-form striker had opened the scoring in the 51st minute before Gor’s Mahia equalized through Austine Odhiambo as the tie looked destined for a share of spoils in Machakos.
Shabana and Bandari, who fought to a 1-1 draw in Mombasa, are ranked at sixth and seventh respectively.
The brace came in handy in extending Ogam’s scoring streak and cementing the former Rainbow FC player’s position atop the scoring charts with 15 goals.
Elsewhere, AFC Leopards and Mathare United fell on the wrong end of Saturday high-scoring results with the latter lacking answers in a 3-0 defeat to Mara Sugar in Awendo Green Stadium.
Despite scoring twice, there was no end to Leopards’ off-the-pitch miseries in the enthralling 4-2 defeat against FC Talanta in Dandora.
Other ties pitting K-Sharks and Ulinzi Stars ended in a solitary goal in favour of Ulinzi while Kakamega Homeboyz edged visitors Bidco United in a similar scoreline in Mumias.
With the results, Tusker remained perched at the top, with Brewers moving to 33 points from 17 games. Kenya Police and KCB ranked second and third with 30 and 28 points, respectively.
Both have taken to the pitch 16 times.
With 15 games in the season, Gor Mahia are fourth on 24 points dwarfing eighth-placed Leopards by two points,
