Kenya Rugby Union is mourning the death of former Kenya Simbas back rower Fred Oduor, who passed away on Monday.

Oduor had a notable career, playing for Kenya Cup sides Blak Blad and Kenya Harlequin. He began his rugby journey at Lenana School in 1972 during his second year.

Oduor transition to club

He transitioned to Blad, where he earned a spot on the National team while the side was in the second division.

His talents extended to the international stage when he was selected to represent the East African Tuskers squad during their tour of Zambia and Zimbabwe in 1982. As part of the composite team comprised of the best players from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, Oduor showcased his skills primarily at numbers six, seven, and eight positions.

Oduor also donned the Simbas jersey, making an appearance against Zambia in July 1980. Following this, he had a stint with the London Metropolitan Police in August 1980. Oduor contributed to AntiAssassins RFC in June 1982 at RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, Kenya.

Meanwhile, on match day eight, Kabras Sugar faced their toughest challenge yet as they squared off against Kenya Harlequin.

Odour’s former side Quins

In the first half, Harlequin seemed to have the upper hand, leading 22-19 at halftime. However, Kabras staged a remarkable comeback in the second half, scoring 31 unanswered points and securing a convincing 50-22 victory. Despite the loss, Quins maintained their fourth position on the log with 28 points.

Kabras Sugar retained their top spot on the log with 40 points, having secured bonus point victories in all eight of their matches so far. Meanwhile, KCB remained undefeated and in second place, defeating Kisumu 64-10 and accumulating 39 points, with seven bonus points from eight outings.

In Nakuru, Menengai Oilers solidified their third position with a 31-18 win over Nondescripts. Despite the loss, Nondescripts held onto sixth place with 14 points, still in contention for a playoff spot.

At Kenyatta University, Blak Blad narrowly defeated the Catholic Monks 28-22, maintaining fifth place with 19 points and playoff aspirations, while the Monks remained in eleventh place, facing relegation with just 6 points.

Mwamba continued their resurgence with a third consecutive win, defeating the Strathmore Leos 27-7 and climbing to seventh place with 14 points.

Nakuru followed closely behind Mwamba with 13 points after a 26-15 victory over Homeboyz, who remained at the bottom of the table with only 2 points.

Looking ahead, there will be only one fixture this weekend as Catholic Monks host Nondescripts in a rescheduled match.

While Kabras and KCB appear set for home semifinal slots, and Oilers and Quins are assured of playoff qualification, the battle for the remaining two slots intensifies among Blad, Nondescripts, Mwamba, and Nakuru with three rounds remaining in the regular season.
