Football legends call for government recognition as they visit Breikh
Some of Kenya’s revered names in football yesterday called on the government to introduce special awards of honour for legends who earned the country fame and respect during their prime days.
Speaking when they paid a visit to former Harambee Stars midfielder Ahmed Breikh at his residence in Majengo, Mombasa County, the legends termed Breikh as a hero who left an indelible mark on the beautiful game.
In a heart-warming display of unity and respect the legends called on the government to extend its honour to Breikh who also played a pivotal role in Feisal FC’s historic victory in 1965, securing the first national cup for a coastal side.
The memorable gathering brought together former Harambee Stars players, coastal legends, and football stakeholders, led by Bandari FC Vice Chairman Twaha Mbarak, to honour a man who contributed immensely to the beautiful game.
His exceptional talent extended to the national team, where he became one of the game’s top midfielders during his time. Breikh’s influence on a generation of players cannot be overstated, making him a cherished figure in Kenyan football history, they said.
During the visit, former Harambee Stars and renowned coach, Mohammed Kheri, emphasised the importance of honouring Ahmed Breikh, a son of the coastal soil.
“Ahmed Breikh is our pride, and as football stakeholders, we should celebrate him for bringing immense pride to our country and the region. He was a midfielder who inspired countless players of our generation and should be recognised for his monumental contribution to football,” Kheri said.
His sentiments were echoed by Bandari FC’s head coach Twahir Muhiddin who stated: “If he had been in Europe, he would have been knighted. I call upon the government to honour him for his outstanding achievements.”
Other legends who were present include Bandari FC Team Manager Douglas Mutua, former referee Khamis Bargazal, former Nyundo player Abdallah Shakir and former AFC Leopards midfileder Abdul Baraza.
Mbarak stressed the need to recognise football legends and pledged to initiate similar visits along the coast.
This heartwarming reunion of football legends serves as a poignant reminder that the roots of Kenyan football run deep, and it is our collective responsibility to honour those who laid the foundation for future generations.
Breikh’s legacy will continue to inspire players, fans, and football enthusiasts across the nation and beyond, proving that true legends are never forgotten.
