The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has issued a stern warning to fans following sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over misconduct during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) match between Kenya and DR Congo.

Kenya played and defeated DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In a press release dated August 7, 2025, FKF President Hussein Mohammed reiterated the federation’s commitment to delivering a safe, dignified tournament. He noted that the breaches witnessed during the opening match have drawn the attention of CAF, putting Kenya’s hosting credentials under scrutiny.

“Any acts of indiscipline not only compromise public safety but also tarnish our national image and jeopardise future hosting opportunities, including preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” Mohammed stated.

Strict guidelines

In a bid to prevent further incidents, FKF has outlined a raft of rules for fans attending upcoming fixtures.

These include a ban on flares, smoke devices, fireworks, weapons, pyrotechnics, laser pointers, alcohol, glass bottles, large flags, banners with inappropriate messages, food, and beverages. Even personal items such as large umbrellas, thermos flasks, whistles, and trumpets have been blacklisted.

“All attendees must comply fully with stadium security procedures and the CAF Code of Conduct for Spectators,” the statement emphasised.

The Federation’s guidelines mirror earlier directives issued by the Ministry of Interior on August 3, aimed at bolstering safety as the tournament kicked off. FKF reminded fans that any breach would lead to immediate ejection, arrest, and prosecution under Kenyan law.

Enhanced security

Security measures around stadiums have been intensified ahead of upcoming matches. Specialised units, including anti-riot and counter-terror squads, have been deployed. Enhanced surveillance through an upgraded CCTV system and an e-ticketing platform is also in place to manage crowd movement and entry.

“We are committed to ensuring CHAN 2024 proceeds without further incident,” FKF noted, adding that additional personnel would be on standby to handle any emergencies swiftly.

Call for patriotism

Despite the setback, FKF has applauded the thousands of fans who have complied with tournament guidelines and maintained decorum during matches. Mohammed urged Kenyans to maintain discipline and uphold the country’s reputation.

“We urge all Kenyans to uphold the highest standards of patriotism, discipline, and hospitality,” he said. “Let us preserve the spirit and integrity of CHAN 2024 and demonstrate to Africa and the world that Kenya is a proud, capable, and responsible sporting nation.”

The month-long CHAN 2024 tournament, co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania, is viewed as a crucial litmus test ahead of the 2027 AFCON.
