FKF prepares for SGM after contempt case dismissal

Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) has trashed a contempt case filed against Football Kenya Federation (FKF) office bearers.
The matter was lodged by sports journalist Milton Nyakundi, who questioned why FKF continued to operate and receive funding from the government and other organisations even after the agency had been disbanded by the then Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amina Mohamed.
Nyakundi argued that a High Court ruling in July 2022 had confirmed then Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed’s legal right to disband FKF. However, in his ruling, SDT Chairman John Ohaga stated: “The contempt case against FKF is dismissed forthwith.”
Similarly, he had requested that FKF officials be jailed for six months, fined for contempt, and barred from accessing FKF offices and bank accounts upon release.
The ruling comes just three days before FKF is set to hold its eagerly awaited Special General Meeting (SGM) this Saturday in Nairobi.
According to a formal convocation letter dated August 9, 2024, signed by FKF CEO Barry Otieno (pictured), a total of 92 delegates will be eligible to participate in the meeting at the Sports View Hotel in Nairobi, starting at 10am.
The letter outlined the agenda of the SGM, which includes the election/ratification of members of the FKF Electoral Committee/Board among the nine key areas to be discussed.
Other agenda items include roll call, appointment of scrutineers, FKF activity report, president’s address, approval of the annual audited financial statement (including the consolidated financial statement and the annual report), approval of the budget, a vote on the adoption of the FKF Electoral Code (2019/2020) and closing remarks.
Invited members include 48 FKF county branches, 18 FKF clubs participating in the FKF Premier League, 10 FKF clubs in the National Super League (NSL), 10 FKF clubs in the National Division One league, three clubs in the FKF Women’s Premier League, two clubs from the Women’s National Super League as well as one representative from the Kenya Football Players Welfare Association.
The FKF Electoral Board, set to be approved by the delegates, will be chaired by lawyer Hesbon Owila.
Other committee members include Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) president and People Sport Editor James Waindi, Alfred Ngang’a, Dan Mule, Marceline Sande, with Farida Lucia Juma and lawyer Robert Asembo on the standby list.
