By , August 30, 2025

As the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) approaches its grand finale on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has officially welcomed FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Kenya.

This marks Infantino’s first visit to the country, coinciding with the much-anticipated final at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

“On behalf of the Kenyan football family, I warmly welcome @FIFAcom President Gianni Infantino to Kenya for the first time, as we gear up for the #CHAN2024 final,” Mohammed posted on an X post dated August 30, 2025.

“Kenya has captured the hearts of the world with our successful hosting of this tournament – today we celebrate that achievement together,” he added, reflecting the growing pride in Kenya’s ability to host major football events.

Global attention

The CHAN final, featuring Morocco and Madagascar, has attracted a host of dignitaries. In addition to Infantino, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe and the President of Madagascar will attend, alongside a delegation of football luminaries.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed the lineup, saying, “Tomorrow’s game has attracted the entire continent, and we expect high-level dignitaries, including the presidents of FIFA and CAF. The head of state from Madagascar will also be in attendance.”

Infantino, who became FIFA President in 2016 and was re-elected unopposed in 2019 with strong African support, has previously visited Tanzania and South Sudan, but this marks his debut in Kenya. Observers say his visit underscores Kenya’s rising credibility as a host for major continental tournaments, especially as CHAN 2024 acts as a rehearsal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Preparations and fan engagement

Preparations for the final are in full swing. Mvurya outlined the day’s schedule, with the closing ceremony starting at 2:00 pm, followed by the match at 6:00 pm. He urged fans with tickets to arrive early to enjoy the full ceremony while emphasising security measures.

Five fan zones—Lucky Summer, Kenya Archives, Githurai, Jacaranda, and Kibra DC grounds—have been set up for public viewing, ensuring wider access.

Looking ahead, FKF has released ticketing details for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gambia on September 5, 2025, at Kasarani, with prices ranging from Ksh300 to Ksh5,000. Coach Benni McCarthy’s squad, blending local and international talent, aims to build on CHAN’s momentum and target a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Infantino’s visit signals a new chapter for Kenyan football, blending celebration with ambition.
