Major roads in Nairobi to be closed ahead of CHAN Final
As Nairobi prepares to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) final on Saturday, August 30, 2025, the city is set for major traffic disruptions starting at 6:00 a.m.
The National Police Service, in collaboration with the CAF, issued a detailed traffic management plan to guide fans heading to Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani, for the highly anticipated Morocco vs. Madagascar showdown.
The measures are part of Kenya’s efforts to showcase its organisational capabilities while co-hosting the tournament with Tanzania and Uganda. Officials expect thousands of fans to converge on the stadium, necessitating extensive road closures and diversions across key Nairobi routes.
Road closures and diversions
According to FKF’s official post on X dated August 29, motorists travelling from Ruiru, Juja, and Thika to the CBD are advised to use Kiambu Road via Exit 4, as a roadblock will be stationed at Muthaiga.
Those heading to Mwiki should use the Ruaka–Baba Dogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River route, while traffic from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru to the Nairobi CBD is directed to the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, with a roadblock at Ruiru Interchange. Githurai commuters are advised to take Githurai 44–Kiambu Road, and access to Kasarani Stadium for vehicles without passes will be restricted to the service lanes at Exits 7 and 8.

Additional police officers have been deployed to enforce the traffic measures, with authorities warning of stern action against violators. Motorists have been urged to cooperate to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Fan zones and security measures
To accommodate fans without tickets, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced five designated fan zones—Lucky Summer, Kenya Archives, Githurai, Jacaranda, and Kibra DC grounds—down from an initial 13.
These zones will broadcast the match live and complement the closing ceremony, scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m., ahead of the 6:00 p.m. kickoff. Mvurya encouraged fans to arrive early, maintain decorum, and prioritize security.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed highlighted the tournament’s unifying role and called for greater corporate investment in Kenyan football.
With high-profile attendees expected, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Kenya aims to conclude CHAN 2024 on a high note, leveraging the event to strengthen its global football profile despite the logistical challenges posed by the extensive traffic disruptions.
