Fifa gives 500 balls to support women football in Kenya
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) vice chairperson Doris Petra yesterday presented Kenyan women football clubs with balls at the FIFA goal project, Kasarani, Nairobi.
Speaking at the FKF headquarter offices, Dorris was upbeat that the balls will help develop women grass root football in the country.
“FIFA has sent us 500 balls to develop women’s football in Kenya. We are giving every Premier league club ten balls each and five balls each to every division one league club. Every lady team participating in the FKF Cup will also get balls while the rest will be distributed to every county league team across the county,” said Petra.
Petra also added that she has discussed with FIFA for additional balls that will help develop the sport in the country, but due to the suspension that was lifted recently, the world football governing body had already completed their budget.
“Our women grass root football clubs are struggling due to the tough economic situation in the country. I am trying my best at the federation level to engage FIFA and see how we can help women footballers in Kenya. These balls will play a big role in their training and development,” the excited FKF leader said.
At least 15 women football clubs showed up for the lowly event to get their balls with notable leaders Gaspo Womens Football Club of the Women’s Premier League being on the frontline.
Others were Mathare United, Kayole Starlets, Limuru starlets, Zetech Sparks and Mukuru starlets who availed themselves and got their balls while the rest followed up during the day.
Petra has now promised women footballers that her office will always be available and open to women of all and sundry with the main objective being to develop football among women in Kenya.
