The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially unveiled the roadmap for Kenya’s 2027 General Election, confirming that the country will head to the polls on Tuesday, August 10, 2027.

The election date is contained in the Commission’s newly launched Election Operations Plan (EOP) for the 2027 General Election, a comprehensive framework designed to guide the planning, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of all activities leading up to the national vote.

Speaking during the unveiling of the plan on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu, who chairs the Election Operations Committee, said the document provides a structured roadmap for the successful conduct of the election and is anchored in the Commission’s Strategic Plan 2024–2029.

“The Election Operations Plan is a comprehensive framework for the effective conduct of the 2027 General Election. It provides a structured roadmap for planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring all activities required for the successful conduct of the election,” Nderitu said.

Key timelines released

Among the critical timelines outlined in the plan is the constitutional requirement that any public officer intending to contest in the 2027 General Election must resign from public office at least six months before the election date.

According to the IEBC, the deadline for resignation will be Tuesday, February 9, 2027.

The announcement is expected to have far-reaching implications for senior government officials, civil servants, county executives, state corporation heads, and other public officers who may be considering elective positions in the next polls.

Roadmap to the polls

The Election Operations Plan seeks to ensure that all election-related activities are undertaken within stipulated timelines while enhancing transparency, accountability, and compliance with Kenya’s electoral laws.

According to the Commission, the framework is designed to outline key electoral activities for timely implementation, promote transparency, accountability, and compliance with the legal framework governing elections, foster stakeholder engagement and citizen participation, and strengthen institutional resilience and preparedness ahead of the polls.

The roadmap will guide activities ranging from voter registration and voter education to candidate nominations, procurement of election materials, training of election officials, results management, and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Countdown to a high-stakes election

The announcement effectively kicks off the countdown to what is expected to be one of Kenya’s most closely watched elections.

The 2027 General Election will determine the country’s next President, Members of Parliament, Senators, Governors, Members of County Assembly, and Woman Representatives.

President William Ruto is expected to seek a second and final term in office, while opposition leaders are already positioning themselves for what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested race.

The election will come against the backdrop of heightened political activity, growing youth engagement in governance debates, and increasing calls for electoral transparency and accountability.
