AFC Leopards stun Kakamega Homeboyz to register second season win
AFC Leopards fought hard to claim a 2-0 win over Kakamega Homeboyz in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League match at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, December 17, 2023.
This is Ingwe’s second win, and it will lift some pressure off the shoulders of head coach Tomas Trucha and his players following a series of poor results.
The goals of the match were scored by Cliffton Miheso and the new signing from Nzoia Sugar, Hassan Beja.
Ingwe shouted their lungs out when they demanded a penalty when Enock Masinza appeared to have handled the ball while attempting to clear a dangerous moment.
The visitors would have claimed the lead in the 27th minute, but Ambrose Sifuna failed to find the back of the net from a good position to strike.
Goals
The moment to grab the lead came in the 34th minute for AFC Leopards when Cliff Nyakeya was brought down inside the penalty area. And a minute later, Miheso managed to score from the spot to hand Ingwe an unlikely lead, given how they were somewhat outclassed by Homeboyz before the goal.
The opener rejuvenated the 1998 Premier League winners, who went ahead to double the lead three minutes later through Beja. The forward, who scored his maiden goal for Leopards, was put through on goal by Maxwell Otieno.
The referee was hawk-eyed during a set-piece occasion; Homeboyz scored, but the goal did not stand as the official judged that Leopards’ goalkeeper Levis Opiyo was fouled in the process.
Opiyo saved AFC Leopards from conceding late in the second half when he managed to stop Moses Shummah’s strike.
