Everton ace Tyler Onyango speaks on prospect of playing for Harambee Stars
Everton ace Tyler Onyango has revealed he would consider playing for the Harambee Stars, days after Benni McCarthy announced making contact with the youngster’s parent club.
Speaking in an interview on Friday, September 19, 2025, Onyango stated that he has been keeping tabs on developments around African football and particularly Kenya’s.
Onyango, however, asserted that his immediate target was on shoring up his performances at the club level.
“I have thought about it, and in the future I am hoping I can look up to it. But my targets for this season are on club football and performing at the highest level. In the next season or maybe the coming year I will consider it,” he stated.
“It will be a great achievement for anyone as you cannot take lightly where you are from,” he added.
McCarthy’s arrival
He also spoke on the arrival of Benni McCarthy as Kenya’s coach, underscoring the importance of having a tactician who has coached at the highest levels, leading the national team.
“We have not spoken personally to anyone myself since he took over. He has seen the highest level, having coached Manchester United, and it is good for the team to have a manager who has coached at such a high level. For a player, it makes it more attractive and enticing,” he added.
Speaking on Monday, September 1, 2025, McCarthy confirmed that Everton youngster Tyler Onyango had been contacted, but it was not the right moment to bring him in.
“Tyler Onyango is a player also that we reached out to, we reached out to Everton to get us some information, and if the player would be willing to come and play for Kenya,” McCarthy said.
“They spoke to his parents, and they showed their desire for him to play for Kenya. But I think it was the timing that wasn’t on our side. You have to make the tough decisions, and those are the reasons why you see the players that are here.”
Onyango, who has been with the Everton senior team since 2020, recently returned to Stockport County on a season-long loan.
Everton and Stockport County released statements on Monday, September 1, 2025, regarding the 22-year-old midfielder returning to the League One side for a second stint.
He has been part of Everton’s first team in the new season, occasionally making it among the EPL matchday squad for David Moyes.
