CS Mvurya hails tennis star Angella Okutoyi’s resilience after ITF W35 Nairobi win

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has congratulated Kenyan tennis star Angella Okutoyi for clinching the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tour Nairobi W35 Week 2 Singles Title, describing her victory as a testament to her resilience and determination.

In a statement posted on his X account on Sunday, January 11, 2026, Mvurya celebrated Okutoyi’s hard-fought win against Italy’s Martina Colmegna in the final, which ended 6-3, 7-6.

“Congratulations, Angella Okutoyi, for clinching the ITF W35 Nairobi Week 2 Singles Title, following a hard-fought win against Italy’s Martina Colmegna, 6-3, 7-6,” Mvurya stated.

Resilience and discipline

Mvurya praised Okutoyi for the qualities that have contributed to her success, noting that her achievements on the international tennis stage serve as an inspiration to many young Kenyans.

“Kenyans and the tennis fraternity celebrate your outstanding triumph, a powerful testament to your resilience, discipline, and unwavering determination,” the Sports CS said.

“We applaud your strides as you fly the Kenyan flag high on the international tennis stage, inspiring many to dream big relentlessly!” Mvurya added.p

The Cabinet Secretary expressed confidence in Okutoyi’s continued progress in her tennis career, encouraging her to maintain her momentum.

“Keep pushing, your breakthrough is inevitable!” Mvurya stated.

Rising tennis star

Following her ITF victory, Okutoyi, who entered the tournament ranked 558th in the world, collected 70 ranking points, propelling her up 82 places to 476th.

Speaking to local media, Okutoyi expressed her joy over the achievement and the boost it gives her world ranking.

“It feels nice to have won here. I am short of words to explain this. I am grateful to have completed a quartet of victories; two in singles category, and another two in the doubles category. This is the first time I am doing that, and I give glory to God,” Okutoyi said, as quoted by a local media station.
