CS Mutua says East Africa will soon be a powerhouse in football
Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has expressed optimism that East African football is on the verge of global recognition, saying the region’s recent performances show it is steadily rising to become a powerhouse.
In a statement posted on his X account on August 23, 2025, Mutua lauded the resilience of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), noting that the three countries demonstrated qualities that prove East Africa is no longer a pushover on the continental stage.
“Our East African boys fought bravely, and while the results didn’t go our way, there is so much to be proud of,” he said.
Regional progress
Despite the tournament exits, the CS pointed out that the progress of the region’s football is visible to fans and opponents alike, stressing that the future belongs to the players who have shown determination and belief.
“Still, the progress is clear for all to see. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have stepped up and shown that East Africa is no longer a pushover. We are steadily rising, and next time, we will be a force to reckon with,” he declared.

The Cabinet Secretary was particularly impressed with Kenya’s defensive discipline throughout their CHAN campaign, viewing it as a crucial building block for future achievements.
“Kenya, in particular, displayed outstanding defensive discipline, holding shape, closing spaces, and frustrating opponents with resilience and grit. That strong backline is the foundation upon which great victories are built,” he observed.
Tactical adjustments needed
Mutua argued that while defensive strength has been a key highlight, East African teams must match it with attacking urgency from the start of matches rather than relying on late bursts of energy.
“When our East African teams combine their rock-solid defending with the same speed, accuracy, and hunger to score that we often see in the final minutes, we will be unstoppable,” he noted.

“The urgency and attacking drive must start from the first whistle, not only when we are chasing the game,” he added.
CHAN performance
Mutua’s remarks come a day after the quarterfinal exits of the three countries in CHAN 2024.
The three co-hosts of the tournament had emerged as winners of their respective groups and were optimistic about proceeding to the semifinals.
In the quarterfinal matches, Kenya lost to Madagascar 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Uganda fell to Senegal 1-0, and Tanzania was defeated 1-0 by Morocco.
