Coach Akonnor credits Gor Mahia’s improvement for silencing KCB
Gor Mahia head Charles Akonnor has praised his side’s improvement in their 1-0 win over KCB Football Club in the fourth round of the 2025/2026 Kenyan Premier League season played on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at the Dandora Stadium.
Felix Oluoch struck in the 62nd minute to inspire K’Ogalo past the Bankers, handing the record champions their second consecutive win of the season after beating Sofapaka 2-0 at the same venue in their previous outing.
Following the win, the Ghanaian tactician cited some sort of improvement in the general performance of Gor Mahia against Robert Matano’s charges. Akonnor, who blamed his men after enduring a humiliating 1-0 defeat to Bidco United in the league opener on Sunday, September 21, 2025, for failure to convert created chances, showed satisfaction after sailing past KCB on Sunday evening.

However, Charles Akonnor further urged his men to be clinical enough in the final third, as there is still room for improvement.
”Of course, we have improved, we played at a high speed and created more goal-scoring chances. The general improvement is good, but we still have to convert our opportunities. It is clear that we had chances, but sometimes you have to be satisfied, you know. Sometimes it becomes difficult to create chances, but we do, we have to be clinical in the final third, that is an area we have to keep improving,” Akonnor said.
Venue challenges
Earlier, Charles Akonnor termed Sunday’s venue unfit for the KCB clash due to the slippery nature of the artificial turf, as both Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums were unavailable.
”We will manage it, the other day we managed it. We will try not to develop in the back, we will play in the opponent’s half and keep them there. We will find a strategy because we have seen the way the opponent plays and we have prepared adequately for that match,” Akonnor said before the match.
The Ghanaian had little choice but to lead his charges to the same ground for a second consecutive week. Despite the conditions, his men adapted well and stuck to their game plan.
