Chepkemoi set to chase two podium victories in Peru
Mercy Chepkemoi will be banking on her world cross-country experience ahead of the World Under-20 Athletics Championships set for Lima, Peru, next week.
Born in 2005, Chepkemoi will compete in both the 5,000m and 3,000m events when the Championships kick off from August 27 through August 31 at the National Stadium in Peru’s capital.
The East Africa Under-20 1,500m gold medalist Chepkemoi is a promising athlete ready to win gold for the nation at the championships.
A Form Three student at Tiloa Secondary School, she is also the East Africa Under-20 5,000m bronze medalist and aims to emulate her role model, Faith Kipyegon, who doubled at the recent Olympic Games in Paris, France.
“I have hopes that we will win, and we are training as a team, ready to bring home gold. Motivated by Faith Kipyegon, I want to win medals,” observed Chepkemoi.
On Monday, she completed a 14km training run at Karura Forest as part of her long-run and endurance training.
“I had a 14km long run, which is part of my training at Karura Forest. I am hopeful of bringing gold in both events. Running two races is not easy, so I focus on good long runs and speed work, which I have mastered very well,” she stated.
She added, “Once in Lima, I promise to do well and bring home medals because I love this country so much. I left school to compete for the country, which shows my dedication.”
