Cheche Ababu set for British rallycross debut at just 14

By , July 24, 2025

Kenya’s 14-year-old rallycross prodigy Cheche Ababu is set to make his international debut this weekend, joining a competitive line-up at the 5 Nations British Rallycross (RX) Championship at Pembrey Circuit, Wales.

Cheche will race in the hotly contested 5NBRX Junior category behind the wheel of a Suzuki Swift, facing off against Britain’s finest young talents, including Tommy Boon, William Hands, Cayden Harris, Teddie MacPherson and Harrison Folley.

The Junior field is one of the weekend’s highlights, bringing together rising stars eager to prove themselves on the British stage.

“I’m excited to make my international Rallycross debut in the UK,” Cheche said.

He added, “This is an incredible opportunity and I am excited for the challenge. I am also looking forward to testing my ability against young and upcoming drivers from other parts of the world.

“I’m grateful to my family and friends who have supported me, and I hope to make them proud as I represent Kenya racing in the UK.”

The event set for Saturday, July 26, 2025, and Sunday, July 27, 2025, also features powerhouse Supercar entries like Patrick and Ollie O’Donovan, Julian Godfrey and Tristan Ovenden, who will pilot machines ranging from the Proton Iriz to Citroen DS3s and Peugeot 208s.

Fans will also see rip-roaring Cross Car battles led by Will Ovenden and Max Weatherley, and classic showdowns in Super Retro, Retro and Supermodified classes featuring Ford Escort, Renault Turbo, Vauxhall Nova and Mercedes SLK V8.

The 14-year-old ace’s participation marks a major step for Kenyan motorsport, as the reigning Kenyan National Cadet Junior Buggy double champion in Rallycross and autocross brings his talent to an international grid.

Currently leading the 2025 local championship standings, he is racing under the respected Peter Gwynne Motorsport Team, a team known for nurturing drivers who have gone on to European and World Rallycross success.

The young Nairobi native shot to global attention in March when the FIA selected him to debut the new Cross Car at the WRC Safari Rally’s Kasarani Super Special Stage.

Now, he follows in the footsteps of European stars like Norway’s Ole Henry Steinsholt and Latvia’s Roberts Vitols, who built careers from the same championship stage.
