CHAN: Justina Wamae rallies Kenyans to respect protocol ahead of Harambee Stars showdown against Zambia

By , August 17, 2025

As the Harambee Stars gear up for their match against Zambia in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), former Roots Party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has urged Kenyan fans to show utmost respect and unity on home turf.

Her message comes at a time when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has placed Kenya under scrutiny over past lapses in match-day security.

In a passionate appeal on Sunday, August 17, 2025, Wamae said, “Leo WaKenya msilete heshima ndogo kwa kiwanja. Bure CAF waseme michuano iwe TZ, mtaziweza kejeli zao na matusi?”

CAF warning

Kenya’s football governing body is already on thin ice with CAF. The Disciplinary Board recently fined the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Ksh 6.4M after fans without tickets forced their way into the stadium during the Harambee Stars’ fixture against Morocco.

CAF has since warned that continued safety and security breaches could see future fixtures moved to neutral venues, with Tanzania floated as a possible option.

The looming threat has added weight to Wamae’s call, which is seen as an effort to rally national pride and restore confidence in Kenya’s ability to host high-profile matches without incident.

Stars optimistic

Despite the off-pitch concerns, Harambee Stars remain upbeat. Head coach Benni McCarthy has praised his players’ resilience in navigating a tough group.

“Everybody said we are in a group of death and we will get zero points, but we find ourselves on top of the mountain,” he said, adding that the team intends to “enjoy that view even better” with a strong finish.

Defender Daniel Sakari echoed his coach’s optimism, crediting McCarthy for boosting team morale. Referring to him affectionately as “Baba,” Sakari said the squad is determined to rise to the occasion and defend their home ground with pride.

Fans urged to heed advisory

The National Police Service has issued a traffic and security advisory ahead of the anticipated sellout at Kasarani Stadium. Fans have been urged to arrive early, use designated routes, and cooperate with officers to ensure safety.

With Group A leadership at stake, the Harambee Stars’ clash against Zambia is not only a battle for points but also an opportunity to showcase Kenya’s football culture. Wamae’s plea captures the moment – a call for discipline, pride, and unity to make Kasarani a fortress for the national team.
