CHAN: A closer look at Kenya’s history against each opponent in Group A
Seven days to the commencement of the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship in East Africa, People Sport has narrowed down Group A, comprising hosts Kenya, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia.
Harambee Stars face an uphill task from the start of the Championship as they lock horns against a tricky side of DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the refurbished Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, at 3 pm.
Here is a brief history of Harambee Stars against each side in their CHAN pool:
Kenya vs DR Congo
Harambee Stars have played DR Congo nine times across various competitions. DR Congo holds the edge with 4 wins, 2 draws. Kenya has recorded 3 wins against the Congolese side.
The most recent competitive encounter was at the 1999 Africa Cup of Nations, where DR Congo won 2–1 in the group stage, before Kenya famously upset them 1–0 in a return match at home.
More recently, they played friendlies in 2016‑2019, where Kenya won in 2017 (2–1) and drew in 2019 (1–1).
Kenya’s recent form suggests growing competitiveness, though DR Congo still holds the historical advantage.
Kenya vs Angola
Their head‑to‑head is balanced: 2 wins apiece since 2006 across four AFCON qualification matches. Kenya beat Angola twice in 2007 (2–1 at home) and again in March 2011 (2–1) during AFCON qualifying, while Angola triumphed in October 2006 (3–1 away) and in June 2011 (1–0 away).
There have been no draws, and each side has shown a capacity to win on the road. The two sides will face off on Thursday, August 7th, 2025, starting at 7 PM at Kasarani Stadium.

Kenya vs Morocco
Morocco has had the upper hand in all official meetings: three wins and two draws from five encounters; Kenya has never beaten the North African football giants. In the 2000 and 2001 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Morocco won 1–0 away, and the return in Nairobi ended in a 1–1 draw.
During World Cup qualifying in 2005, Morocco whitewashed Kenya 5–1 in Rabat, and the Nairobi fixture ended in a goalless draw. The most recent meeting was a friendly in 2014, when Morocco won 3–0 in Marrakech. Overall, Kenya has struggled historically against the Atlas Lions, managing draws at best. Kenya will face Morocco on Sunday, 10 August 2025, starting at 3 PM local time.
Kenya vs Zambia
Kenya and Zambia last faced off in the 2024 COSAFA Cup. Kenya defeated Zambia 2-0 in their opening Group B match in South Africa. Austine Odhiambo and Patrick Otieno netted two first-half goals at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
It remains an open fixture for either side heading into the final fixture of Group A on Sunday, August 17th, 2025, at Kasarani Stadium, starting at 3 PM local time.
With a completely new squad assembled by the head coach, Bennie McCarthy, Kenya enters Group A with mixed fortunes. Harambee Stars could, however, use the home advantage to sail through.
