Busy year as KGU releases amateur golfers’ 2021 calendar
Kenya Golf Union’s 2021 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship series (KAGC) will see the revival of two events which were part of the Golfer of the Year series which has since been renamed to KAGC.
Gold Fields Trophy, set for May 1 to 2 at Kakamega Sports Club and Ronald Marshall & Roby Gibson Trophy, last held in 2010, now slated for September 4 to 5 at Njoro Country Club will now be part of the 22-event series set to tee off on January 23 to 24 with the Sigona Bowl.
In addition to the two events making a return, the organisers have introduced the Nandi Bears Trophy championship which will make its debut on October 16 to 17 at Nandi Bears Club.
The 2020 series was cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic after only three legs, Sigona Bowl, Mt Kenya Championship and Muthaiga Open.
KGU was, however, able to run the MatchPlay and StrokePlay which were used to select amateurs who will participate in the Magical Kenya Open in March.
Isaac Makhoha and Jay Sandhu cliched the two tickets respectively. Just like last year, Sigona will host the first event, the 62nd Sigona Bowl on January 23 and 24.
This will be a 54-hole event where players will not only earn KAGC ranking points but also World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Nyeri Golf Club will host the second event of the series, Mt Kenya Championship on February 6 and 7 before action moves to Muthaiga Open scheduled for February 20 and 21.
The series is set to conclude on December 11 and 12 when golfers play at the Nyali Open.
Two of the biggest amateur championships, MatchPlay and StrokePlay are scheduled for May 13 to 16 at Muthaiga and October 21 to 24 at Nakuru respectively. MatchPlay winner will bag 100 ranking points with runner up collecting 60.
Third and fourth places will be awarded 40 and 30 points respectively. Golfers reaching the round of 8 and 16 also stand to earn points.
Each event has ranking points for amateurs which are considered while selecting teams to represent the country in international events and also while selecting amateurs who will play in the Magical Kenya Open.
