Blazers carry the day
It was a good day in the office for nine-time Africa Club Cup (ACC) hockey champions Blazers after bagging maximum points against local rivals Strathmore Scorpions courtesy of a 1-0 win in their continental fixture at the City Park stadium, Nairobi.
The rivalry between Blazers and the new Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women’s Premier League champions was renewed in the African tournament.
Blazers’ coach Jos Openda make a comeback to the coaching world after his short-lived sabbatical leave that kicked off in 2018.
Despite kicking off the women’s competition with a stalemate against Lakers on Monday morning, Blazers braved on in their second match to deny Strathmore Scorpions a lone goal.
The match was decided by Melvin Omondi’s stick in the 42nd minute of the clash.
Meanwhile, it was mixed results for the Kenyan men’s trio in the second day that started with a 10-0 win by Kenya Police over Moshi Khalsa from Tanzania as Butali Warriors settled for a 2-2 stalemate with the Exchequers from Ghana.
Scoring momentum
Titus Kimutai led the Law Enforcers by scoring four goals and will be in line for the top scorers’ award should he keep up with the scoring momentum marching to the finals this Sunday at the Dashmesh grounds.
Mathew Momanyi scored two goals bolstered by Danstone Wabwire, Robert Masibo, Vincent Odindo and Mathew Kipchirchir to add salt to a wound on Moshi Khalsa who kickstarted their journey by losing 9-0 to Police Machine of Nigeria on the opener day.
Butali’s ferocious attack in the first quarter led to two goals in a span of 10 minutes to take an early 2-0 lead.
The lead was however cancelled just one minute later and the scores were indefinitely levelled in a span of four minutes for the match to head to halftime tied 2-2.
The scores later remained even to the final whistle despite Butali commanding the possession widely and with several short corners not converted to points.
