Benni McCarthy teases Tanzania after Harambee Stars win against Zambia
By Arnold Ngure, August 17, 2025Harambee Stars head coach, Benni McCarthy, has teased Tanzania following the narrow win by Kenya against Zambia during their last fixture of Group A.
Speaking in a press conference after the match on Sunday, August 17, 2025, McCarthy teased Tanzania, which is now poised to meet the Atlas Lions in their quarter finals.
“At the end of the day, I am happy with the win because we get to play our next match in the quarter finals, and we stay in Kenya, and that is all that is important,” McCarthy said.
Experience group of death
“Tanzania will get their wish, and they will experience what we experienced in the group of death. Now, Morocco is going to Tanzania, so they must have one foot back after the Morocco game so that they know what we went through in every game in the tournament,” he remarked.

Following a spirited campaign that saw Harambee Stars top Group A, after being seen as the underdogs among giants like Morocco, Zambia, and DRC, the pressure had shifted to the quarters, where a section of Tanzania fans had hoped to clash with Kenya on their soil if the team came second in Group A.
However, even with a reduced number of fans allowed into the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium, Kenya dominated the game and secured a solitary goal to avoid playing their quarter finals in Tanzania.
Formidable Morocco
“Zambia was stubborn today; they defended and played very well. But, at the end of the day, when we moved the ball the way that we did, and created the chance for Ryan (Ogam), we scored one goal, yet we would have liked them to be more,” McCarthy said after the match

Adding: “Good luck to Tanzania in the next round.”
Tanzania will now face Morocco, a formidable team, which had Kenya on its back foot in the clash, which Harambee Stars won by a single goal.
Kenya, on the other hand, will face Madagascar, which came second in Group B with 7 points, below Tanzania, which topped Group B with 10 points.
