Akida feted in Greece
Harambee Starlets forward Esse Akida has been feted for her exploits with Greek club PAOK during the annual Greek Panhellenic Association of Paid Footballers and Women Footballers (PSAPP) awards.
Akida emerged as top scorer during the 2021/22 Greek women’s premier league season and was rewarded for her 18 goals.
Commenting on her official Facebook page after receiving the award, Akida said, “First allow me to thank the people of Greece and the entire PSAPP who made this happen. Recognizing good performance from women footballers isn’t something that everyone does and I want to thank those who made this possible for recognizing our efforts in a game that is predominantly dominated by men.”
“I would want to thank my teammates for making this happen. Without them, I wouldn’t have been the top scorer last season. Through their efforts and teamwork, they helped me achieve this and it would be very unfair not to recognize their contribution to this award, “ she added.
She also had a word of encouragement for aspiring Kenyan women footballers, saying, “To aspiring women footballers back at home, yesternight proved that no one can dim your light when you are dedicated to what you do. Keep grinding, keep working on your craft, and keep believing because one day you will win too.”
Meanwhile, Bunyore Starlets have been reinstated to the FKF Women Premier League following an SDT ruling and will be playing Ulinzi Starlets on Sunday, at the Mumboha Grounds.
In other matches, reigning champions Vihiga Queens will be hosting Zetech Sparks at the Mumias Complex on Sunday afternoon, while Kisumu All Starlets host former champions Thika Queens at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu and Trans Nzoia Falcons are up against Wadadia at Kenyatta Stadium in Kitale on Saturday.
